The Ultimate Comfort Snack: Homemade Emping Kelapa 🥥🌾
There is something incredibly soul-warming about traditional snacks. Today, I’m sharing one of my absolute favorites: Emping Kelapa.
If you aren’t familiar with it, Emping Kelapa is a simple yet addictive treat made from young rice grains. It’s the perfect balance of chewy, salty, and sweet, making it nearly impossible to stop at just one spoonful!

What is Emping Kelapa?
The star of the show is the Emping—rice grains that have been harvested while still young and green, then pounded flat. It has a beautiful, natural green hue and a distinct nutty aroma.
To bring it to life, we mix it with:
Fresh Grated Coconut: Steamed slightly with a pinch of salt to make it fluffy and rich.
Sugar: For that perfect hint of sweetness.
A Touch of Salt: To balance the flavors and make the coconut pop.
The Perfect Companion for Any Occasion

The best thing about Emping Kelapa is its versatility. It’s not just a dessert; it’s an “anytime” snack. In our home, we enjoy it
📺 While watching TV: It’s the best alternative to popcorn!
🧺 At Picnics: Easy to pack and share with everyone.
☕ Chatting with Friends: It pairs perfectly with a hot cup of coffee or tea.
🤝 Serving Guests: A wonderful way to show hospitality with a traditional touch.
How We Make It
As you can see in the photos and video, the process is all about the texture. We start with the dry emping (young rice), then we steam the freshly grated coconut to ensure it’s soft and moist. Once everything is tossed together with the sugar and salt, the rice grains soften slightly from the moisture of the coconut, creating a texture that is uniquely delicious.
